Sunset Beach Timeline -- March 1998

 

March 2, 1998

Baby Switch

When Olivia insists that her baby is still alive, Dr. Brock worries that Olivia may be part of a small percentage of women for whom the amnesia drug won't work. Caitlin finds herself having to breastfeed the baby for the first time with an audience.

Is Ben the Killer?

The bullet misses Meg. Casey, who heard the shot, comes to help them. Eddie asks PseudoBen why he set Eddie up, then wonders if maybe PseudoBen set Meg up.

 

March 3, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

Eddie gives everything in the safe to PseudoBen. Ben is delayed from arriving at the station to fill out the police report by another headache. When he finally arrives at the police station, Ben has difficulty when Ricardo asks him to make a list of the contents of the safe. After Ben leaves, Gabi tells Ricardo that she's never seen Ben act that way before. Ricardo says that he has -- the night that Maria died. Meg comes downstairs and finds someone fiddling with the door.

 

March 4, 1998

Gabi & Ricardo

Gabi tells Ricardo that she's quitting her job because every time she begins to have feelings for someone, she ruins their life, and she's beginning to have feelings for Ricardo. When Antonio asks why Ricardo, who usually carries a grudge, can forgive Gabi so easily, Ricardo says that he carries a grudge against people who deserve it, and Gabi doesn't deserve it.

Martin's Syndrome

While Michael and Vanessa are asleep, Virginia puts two drops of the potion on Vanessa's arm.

Is Ben the Killer?

It turns out that the person who was jiggling the doorknob is Joan. Tyus says that Tim has stabilized and that he's going to be moved to Cedar Oaks, since they specialize in long-term care. Tyus discusses Ben's headaches with him. Ben admits that he's been having these headaches since long before the cave-in, although it's been five years since he's had one.

 

March 5, 1998

Martin's Syndrome

When Vanessa notices the splotch on her arm, she puts on a long-sleeved shirt and then sends Michael away. When Jimmy says that Virginia hasn't bought him any new school supplies, Michael wonders what Virginia did with the money he gave her.

Baby Switch

Olivia has a nightmare of someone kidnapping her baby.

 

March 6, 1998

Martin's Syndrome

Vanessa breaks into her mother's medical file, and what she finds there convinces her that she has Martin's Syndrome. At Virginia's suggestion, Michael buys Vanessa a sexy dress.

Baby Switch

Olivia remembers the phone call from Annie, though she doesn't recognize the voice. Caitlin tells Cole that she wants to name the baby Armando Deschanel III, and they'll call him Trey for short. Knowing that they don't know that Olivia "lost" her baby, Annie suggests that rather than calling, Caitlin and Cole should just drop in on Gregory and Olivia. When Olivia answers the door, Caitlin, Cole and Trey are standing on the doorstep.

 

March 9, 1998

Martin's Syndrome

Vanessa's lesions disappear. Virginia vows to make sure that the lesions last longer the next time.

Baby Switch

Gregory breaks the news to Caitlin and Cole that Olivia lost the baby. While Caitlin comforts Olivia, Gregory bonds with Trey. Olivia is plagued by the memory of hearing her baby crying.

 

March 10, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

When Tyus asks Ben if he's under any kind of emotional stress that is causing the headaches, Ben says that he's happier than he's been in years. Tyus gives Ben some medication for his headaches and schedules some tests to find the cause of the headaches. Ben overhears Joan telling Meg about Tim's phone call to them in Kansas insisting that Meg was in danger from Ben, and accuses Joan of saying that Meg is in danger from him. After Ben leaves, Meg apologizes for Ben's behavior, blaming it on the headaches.

Baby Switch

Caitlin sees Cole crying because, he says, he feels sorry for Olivia and Gregory's loss. When Sean attacks Gregory and Olivia for not being happy for Caitlin and Cole, Gregory breaks the news to Sean that Olivia lost the baby. Dr. Brock tells Annie that the drug doesn't work on a small percentage of people and so she should keep Olivia from being reminded of her baby to keep her from remembering about Annie taking the baby.

Ricardo & Gabi

Antonio and Gabi meet for breakfast to discuss why Gabi's having so much trouble forgiving herself for her accusations against Ricardo. Antonio tells Gabi that he knows that it isn't possible to leave somewhere and start clean somewhere else. When Gabi asks if he's speaking from experience, he dodges the question.

 

March 11, 1998

Baby Switch

Olivia refuses to leave the nursery because she insists that she can hear her baby crying. Once Gregory gets Olivia to go into the bedroom, Cole climbs in the window to talk about the baby. Olivia tells Cole that she remembers hearing her baby cry. Gregory decides to move the family out of the house. Since Dr. Brock said that just about anything might restore Olivia's memories, Annie goes to Gregory to apologize for upsetting Olivia, and to suggest that he get rid of anything that could remind Olivia of the baby. Gregory tells Annie that he can't pretend that he never lost a son, and that he's going to keep the music box to remind them of him.

Is Ben the Killer?

Ben sets up a romantic picnic dinner for Meg. Ben dodges Meg's questions about his appointment with Tyus. Ben tells Meg that he had the headaches when Maria died, and that he doesn't want Maria coming between them, and that he doesn't know what he'd do if anything happened to her. He shows her that the picnic basket is full of her favorite foods. She leaves to purchase some strawberries, his favorite, and he gets another headache. When Meg returns with the strawberries, Ben calls her over to where he's standing by a cliff, and Meg nearly falls off.

 

March 12, 1998

Martin's Syndrome

Mrs. Moreau tells Virginia that putting the potion directly on Vanessa's skin won't work because it will wear off. If she puts the potion in her lotion, she'll get another dose every day. Vanessa comes to interview Tyus about the physical effects of stress, specifically whether stress can cause skin conditions. She tells Tyus that she had a minor scare with a rash that went away, and decides to tell Michael the truth.

Gabi & Ricardo
Is Ben the Killer?

Madame Carmen tells Gabi that if she leaves Sunset Beach, her problems will follow, and that she doesn't see any future at all for Meg, which prompts her to tell Gabi that she has to warn Meg that she's in danger. Gabi tells Ricardo and Antonio that they've convinced her to stay in Sunset Beach. Ricardo assures Gabi that she still has her job at the station. He sees that she has Madame Carmen's business card and asks her where she got it. When they arrive to visit Tim, Meg fills Caitlin in on what happened to Tim. Caitlin doesn't believe that Tim was drunk when he fell, because Tim was completely sober when Caitlin and Cole left the reception. After Joan leaves the room, Ben tells Meg that he and she will never stand in front of a priest in Sunset Beach.

 

March 13, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

Ben tells Meg that he wants to get married in Venice, and then throw a big party for their family and friends in Sunset Beach on their return. Gabi tells Meg that Madame Carmen has predicted her death. Meg sets out to give Madame Carmen a piece of her mind about upsetting Gabi. When he can't find Meg, Ben calls Gabi, who tells him that Meg went to Madame Carmen's. Madame Carmen tells Meg that the cards don't lie and that she needs to know her future in order to change it, or else she'll die.

Martin's Syndrome

Virginia takes Jimmy to the movies. While they're passing Vanessa's building, Virginia tells Jimmy that she thought she saw someone breaking into Vanessa's apartment and that she needs to check it out. Virginia goes into Vanessa's bedroom and puts the potion in her lotion. Michael and Vanessa arrive just as Virginia's about to leave.

 

March 16, 1998

Martin's Syndrome

When Vanessa and Michael catch her in Vanessa's apartment, Virginia tells them that she was driving past and saw someone crawling out of the window. When Vanessa asks how Virginia got in, Virginia says that the door was wide open and that the prowler must have left the door open. Michael notices that there's no sign of forced entry, so the prowler must have had a key. When Michael and Vanessa doubt her, Jimmy backs up Virginia's story. Jimmy is followed by a police officer that he told about the break-in. Vanessa smooths some lotion on her arms, and then she discovers the rash on her arms as she gets ready for bed.

Is Ben the Killer?

PseudoBen thinks back over his victims, and anticipates murdering Meg. Madame Carmen and Ben fight about the cause about the difficulties between Ben and Maria. Madame Carmen turns out to be Antonio, Maria and Ricardo's mother. Ricardo tells Carmen that he knows that Ben's responsible for Maria's death. Ben asks Meg why she went to see Madame Carmen, and Meg flashes back to Gabi's warning, but she doesn't tell Ben, who thinks that she went because she misses Mark. Ben promises Meg that she'll be leaving problems of her life far, far behind her.

 

March 17, 1998

Baby Switch

Gregory surprises Olivia by telling her that they're moving. When Olivia refuses to even consider the possibility of moving, Gregory tells her that he wants to move because he's trying to escape the pain of losing the baby. Annie arrives, determined to swipe the music box. When she catches Annie in the act of trying to steal the music box, Annie tells Caitlin that she was going to make the music box "disappear" to save Olivia and Gregory the pain of remembering their baby, and Caitlin says that it should be up to them to keep it or not. Cole comforts Olivia, who insists that she can hear the baby crying. Annie tells Gregory that she knows why Olivia can't remember what happened to her.

Is Ben the Killer?

When Meg tells Joan that she and Ben are eloping, Joan is happy that Meg is going to be living out her fantasy of getting married in Venice. Joan calls Hank to tell him about Ben and Meg's plans, and Hank says that he'll fly in to Sunset Beach to see them off. When Eddie asks Ben why he hasn't called about working for him again, Ben claims that he doesn't know what Eddie's talking about.

 

March 18, 1998

Baby Switch

Cole promises Olivia that he's going to figure out what happened to "their" son. Olivia says that she wants to get to know Trey. However, she breaks down just as she is about to hold Trey for the first time. When Olivia says that she wants to bury her baby, Gregory tells her that he was cremated. In an effort to get to the bottom of what happened to Olivia, Gregory decides to go to San Francisco to examine all of the records about the delivery of Olivia's baby. Annie suggests to Gregory that Olivia may have been drinking and blacked out. Gregory tells her that Olivia wouldn't have been drinking while she was pregnant, but Annie tells Gregory that enough happened while she was pregnant to drive Olivia to drink. After Gregory leaves, Annie calls Dr. Brock, who says that seeing her baby again would make Olivia remember the night she gave birth.

Is Ben the Killer?

When Eddie overhears Meg telling Caitlin that she and Ben are eloping, he calls PseudoBen to demand the money for breaking into Ben's safe, and to tell him about Ben and Meg's plans to elope. Meg arrives home and one Ben or the other tells her that they're leaving for Venice that night. Ben says that Meg's life will never be the same, which reminds her of Carmen's prediction that Gabi, Vanessa or Meg would never be the same again.

 

March 19, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

When Joan tells Meg that Hank wants to see her one last time before she gets married, Ben agrees to wait until morning to elope. Ben gives Meg the pearl necklace that he had made for her. Ben and Meg agree to sleep in separate beds while Hank is in town. Meg gives Ben her wedding present for him, a scarf.

Baby Switch

Dr. Brock tells Gregory that Gregory can't see Olivia's file without Olivia's written permission. Gregory takes Dr. Brock back to Sunset Beach with him to obtain Olivia's permission for him to look at the file. While Olivia and Annie fight over the music box, it drops from their hands and breaks. Olivia says that she will never feel at home there until she gets her baby back.

 

March 20, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

Regardless of Meg's insistence that Mark knew his killer, Gabi insists that it's Grogan. Meg overhears Carmen telling Ricardo and Antonio that Ben trashed her shop. Ben calls to ask Tyus for a stronger headache medicine prescription. When he gets off of the phone, he sees a note in Maria's handwriting asking him to meet her. In PseudoBen's lair, Ben finds the chopped up pictures of Meg and wonders if he could have done it. When he exclaims "What in God's name is going on?!?", PseudoBen enters the room and says "Not in God's name. In mine."

Martin's Syndrome

Vanessa decides that she needs to know if the rash is Martin's Syndrome, so she makes an appointment to meet with Luisa Estrada, her mother's doctor.

 

March 23, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

Meg is surprised when Carmen says that Ben was the Terror Island Killer. PseudoBen corners Ben and tells him that he's "back." PseudoBen knocks Ben out and takes Ben's jacket and scarf and chains Ben to a wall. Ben awakes and finds himself trapped. Hank and Joan arrive from the airport. When Meg goes out to find Hank's reading glasses, she bumps into PseudoBen.

Martin's Syndrome

Vanessa tells Michael about Lena's illness, but can't bring herself to tell him that she's her mother. After Michael leaves, Dr. Estrada tells Vanessa that it's too early to tell if she has Martin's Syndrome or not. Vanessa refuses to check into the hospital to have tests run.

 

March 24, 1998

Baby Switch

Caitlin and Annie arrive and Gregory introduces Dr. Brock and tells them that Dr. Brock is going to explain what happened to Olivia's baby. Gregory invites Cole and Annie to stay so that they can be witnesses in the lawsuit he's going to file against Dr. Brock. Olivia reads her file and is shocked by the contents.

Ben/PseudoBen

PseudoBen is surprised to see Hank and Joan, whom he obviously doesn't recognize.

 

March 25, 1998

Is Ben the Killer?

PseudoBen tells Meg that he wants to get married in Sunset Beach because he's not the same as the Ben Evans who married Maria. Meg agrees that he's different, which makes PseudoBen nervous. PseudoBen tells Meg that the first time he and Meg met was on the beach, when it was in the Java Web. Ben gets ahold of his cell phone and calls his house to warn Meg. Meg can't hear what Ben is saying. By the time Ben gets close enough to be understood, PseudoBen has taken the phone from her. Ben then calls Ricardo, and just as Ricardo answers, PseudoBen arrives and knocks Ben unconscious. Meg tells Hank and Joan that she and Ben aren't going to Venice. Hank and Joan tell Meg that there is danger that they'll lose the farm.

Baby Switch

Gregory demands to know why Olivia signed the release to have their baby cremated. Olivia denies that she signed the release, but Gregory doesn't believe her. Sean watches as Dr. Brock corners Annie and tells her that he knows who she is. Annie is sneaking upstairs to listen to Gregory and Olivia's argument when Sean catches her and asks what's up with her.

 

March 26, 1998

Baby Switch

Sean figures out that Trey is Olivia's baby. When Gregory accuses her of causing the baby's death, Olivia is willing to admit that he might be right. Sean tells Gregory that he intends to prove that Olivia is trying to remember.

Is Ben the Killer?

Meg offers Hank some objective business advice from Ben. While she's looking for Ben, she notices that he (really PseudoBen) unplugged the answering machine. Ricardo tells Meg that she shouldn't trust Ben because even though several people saw Maria and Ben fighting, Ben always acted like he didn't know what they were talking about. PseudoBen cuts Ben's face so that their faces will no longer be identical. When Ben threatens to kill PseudoBen, PseudoBen asks if it's possible to kill someone who's already dead. Ben tells PseudoBen that he always gets his headaches when PseudoBen is up to no good. PseudoBen tells Meg that he thinks that the headaches are gone, and that he unplugged the answering machine because he wants her all to himself.

 

March 27, 1998

Baby Switch

Annie gives Gregory a bill from a liquor store with what appears to be Olivia's signature on it, dated the day Olivia lost the baby. Gregory shows Olivia the liquor store bill and tells her that he's going to send her to rehab. Caitlin and Cole separately listen to a suicide note that Olivia left on their answering machine. Cole goes to stop her.

Is Ben the Killer?

Ben calls Derek "Derek" for the first time.

Ben/Derek

When Casey arrives to see Meg, Derek struggles with announcing him without giving away that he doesn't know who he is. Derek goes through his memories from Terror Island for someone to say Casey's name. Derek tells Ben that he'll kill Meg unless Ben tells him the passwords to Ben's financial files. While collecting Tim's personal effects for his transfer to Cedar Oaks, they find the ad for Derek's lair.

 

March 30, 1998

Ben/Derek

Ben refuses to tell Derek his passwords until Derek proves that Meg's still alive. Derek arrives to finish Tim off and sees the ad for his lair.

Baby Switch


Cole finds Olivia at the Grotto and stops her from killing herself. He asks Olivia to let him help her through the loss of her baby. Gregory has Annie horizontal on his desk when Caitlin calls to tell him that she's worried about Olivia. Annie has a fantasy about making Olivia disappear. Sean buys a new music box to replace the one that Annie broke. Olivia tells her family that she's leaving Sunset Beach for a while. After making one last attempt to convince Olivia to stay in Sunset Beach, Gregory lets Olivia leave town. Sean corners Annie and asks her what really happened to Olivia's baby.

 

March 31, 1998

Martin's Syndrome

Casey tells Virginia that Michael is moving in with Vanessa.

Baby Switch

When Annie denies that she stole Olivia's baby and gave him to Caitlin, Sean tells Annie that he wants to meet the woman who gave birth to Trey, or he'll tell Caitlin about his suspicions. Annie leaves the house and decides to see if she can get someone at the mission to pretend to be Trey's biological mother.
